Dune: The Battle for Arrakis is the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) version of the legendary Dune II by Westwood Studios (1992). This game laid the foundations of real-time strategy: base building, resource gathering and controlling an army with a mouse or gamepad. Without it there would be no Command & Conquer or Warcraft.
Story
The Emperor has announced that whichever House mines the most spice on the planet Arrakis will rule it. Three Houses enter the fight: the noble Atreides, the cunning Ordos and the cruel Harkonnen. You choose one and play a campaign of nine missions, taking more and more territory of the planet.
How to play
- Harvesters collect spice from the sand and bring it to the refinery: that is your money.
- Buildings can only be placed on rock, and they need windtraps for power.
- Army: infantry, trikes, quads, tanks, rocket launchers and unique units for each House: the Atreides sonic tank, the Ordos deviator and the Harkonnen Devastator.
- Sandworms swallow any vehicles caught on the sand, yours and the enemy's.
Controls
The Sega gamepad layout (A, B, C and Start) is shown under the game window, and you can change it in the emulator settings. A gamepad works best, and on a phone an on-screen gamepad appears.
Tips
- Build a second harvester first: spice is the main resource.
- Surround your base with walls and turrets, the computer attacks regularly.
- The Sega version differs in its passwords and gamepad interface, but the core is the same as Dune II on PC.
