Panzer General

Panzer General is a turn-based strategy game for DOS released in 1994 by Strategic Simulations, Inc. (SSI). You take command of the German forces during the Second World War and lead them through a long campaign.

The game simulates not only individual battles but also the overall course of the war. You decide how to develop your army, which units to use and what tactics to apply. Units that survive a battle gain experience and stay with you into the next scenario, so you naturally start to care about your veteran tanks and aircraft. Win quickly and decisively, and history can take a different course.

The graphics are simple by today's standards but colorful and detailed, with a hexagonal map and a huge variety of hardware, from tanks and aircraft to artillery and infantry. Every unit has its own strengths and weaknesses, which makes the game feel realistic.

The gameplay may seem complex at first, but after a few sessions everything becomes clear. Panzer General went on to start a whole series and remains one of the most accessible and addictive wargames ever made.
