Space Federation (Star Reach)
Marriage (Maryazh) is one of the most popular computer versions of preferans from the 90s. It was installed on almost every office and home PC in Russia: people played it on lunch breaks, and many learned the rules of this card game from it.
What is preferans
Preferans is a three-player trick-taking card game played with a 32-card deck (seven to ace). Each player gets 10 cards and two go to the talon. Players bid for the right to name the contract: the highest bidder takes the talon, discards two cards and promises to take at least the declared number of tricks. The other two decide whether to defend (whist) or pass.
The Sochi variant
The game uses Sochi rules, the most common variant in Russia. Bidding starts at six, misère can be bid during the auction, and the pool, mountain and whists are scored by the classic rules. The computer keeps the score sheet, so there is nothing to count by hand.
How to play
- Pick cards with the mouse or with the arrow keys and Enter.
- You play against two computer opponents who count tricks pretty well.
- A game lasts until the pool is closed, then the program totals the result in whists.
Tips for beginners
- Do not bid without sure tricks: going down is punished with mountain points.
- Defend if you have at least two sure tricks, because that is how you earn on other players' contracts.
- Only bid misère with short suits and low cards.
